Letter to SPJ members on my at-large candidacy

Here’s a letter that went out to SPJ members today. Please let me know if you have any questions.

On the way to preschool one day, my 5-year-old daughter Catie asked, “Why do like your work, Daddy?”

“Because I get to make a difference, honey,” I responded.

“Well, then I want to do that, too,” she said.

I often give the response I gave Catie to people who ask why I’m running for At-Large Director.

My leadership experience at the student, pro chapter and national levels gives me a broad perspective to make a difference for members, chapters and SPJ national.

I’ve led two student chapters, the Press Club of Long Island pro chapter (serving 13 years on the board in various positions) and served on the national board as Region 1 Director, winning the Regional Director of the Year Award in 2005.

Recently, I co-chaired this year’s SPJ Region 1 Spring Conference and I am currently SPJ Eastern Chapter Doctor, where my job is to listen to chapter issues and offer constructive guidance.

I’m also set apart by my well-rounded experience in the print, television, online, mobile and social media worlds. I know what you’re going through because I’ve been there.

Currently, I am the online editor for local news at Newsday, where mobile journalism is key to what we do.

My SPJ goals are simple: to keep us on an innovative track to grow as an invaluable resource to our members, and to provide the necessary training, technical, administrative and recruitment tools for leaders.

Recent SPJ accomplishments:

  • I built a training module on smartphone newsgathering that is being rolled out in sessions across the country. A new video-on-demand version is now featured on SPJ.org.
  • As co-chair of the SPJ Region 1 Spring Conference, I created and managed its website and social media accounts for the SPJ Region 1 Spring Conference and led its first-ever Working Press-like student news operation, bringing together 10 students from local journalism programs.
  • Co-chaired the Constitution Revision Committee for PCLI.
  • Aided a pro chapter in returning to compliance with SPJ rules.

My wife — we met at our college newspaper — my closest friends and many other heroes of mine are all SPJ members.

If she goes on the track she predicts, perhaps Catie will be, too.

I hope to see you at the national convention in Fort Lauderdale. Meantime, I’d love to hear from you. Catch me on Twitter,Facebook, LinkedIn and G+ (Hangout, anyone?). I’ll follow you right back.

Best wishes,

Carl
