Making the most out of mobile newsgathering

With some helpful apps, a little training, imagination and an open mind, journalists these days can turn their ever-present handhelds into powerful multimedia devices that can give them an edge on the competition and in their careers.

In five new SPJ eCampus on-demand videos, hosted by yours truly, you’ll get the basics on how to get started by using everything from lightweight gear to social media, and you’ll see some great examples of smartphone journalism at work. The videos are exclusively for Society of Professional Journalists members.

Here they are:

  1. Multimedia Light
  2. Nitty Gritty: Apps
  3. Nitty Gritty: Tools
  4. Using Social Media
  5. Putting it all Together

I’d like to thank SPJ’s Debora Wenger, Chris Vachon and Heather Porter for your their, direction and patience. And thank you to newsday.com’s T.C. McCarthy, who is featured in some of the videos and helped get this project going.

Also, make sure to check out Lara Salahi’s videos on personal branding, as well as SPJ’s full suite of eCampus videos.

Enjoy.
