Two new team awards for LI Now, newsday.com

Last night, for the second year in a row, the newsday.com/towns community news crew’s Long Island Now blog took home the first-place Press Club of Long Island Media Award for best news blog.

In 2011, the team, which included editors Eileen Holliday and Josh Stewart, as well as community journalists T.C. McCarthy and Erin Geismar, provided a stream of thoughtfully written posts and a barrage of breaking news. We were recognized specifically for our coverage of Tropical Storm Irene, where T.C. and Erin turned around mojo-focused posts that included video from scenes of chaos, and stories of fun and ingenuity.

One of my favorite items is this video of T.C. from Babylon Village on the South Shore of Long Island.

Erin told us about how people were coping on the East End in the aftermath of the storm. And virtually the entire newsroom participated with dispatches from the field.

This coverage also contributed to newsday.com’s Silurians Award for breaking news — also related to Irene. The award was sent to the newsroom just the other day.

Overall, Newsday won 22 PCLI awards.

Congratulations everyone on the great work!
